This is the last part in this series of lessons on Genesis 1:2-5.
Gen. 1:2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
Verse 4, “And God saw the light, that is was good”
Everything that was created was created for a purpose, which is, to reveal Truth about YHVY. His desire is to make Himself known to His “sons” and “daughters” that He created in His own Image. The “light” that He created in the Universe was to SHOW something about His Nature. There is a purpose to the natural light shining in creation- to TEACH concerning His SON in us, that we may KNOW, on a personal level, our Creator.
“But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.” Prov. 4:18
YHVY created light to give to man, as an example of who and HOW He is. In Proverbs 4:18, we can see this. The Way of Yeshua (the Lamb is its lamp Rev. 21:23, Created light is a revelation of Yeshua, who is the radiance of the Glory of G-d, Heb. 1:3), the way of the just, SHINES! The physical REPRESENTS the spiritual in this. G-d has given us light to REVEAL His nature, and to describe Himself to mankind. He has given the physical light so that we might have a way of COMMUNICATING this wonderful TRUTH of G-d to one another in our fellowship with Him, and His having this physical creation of light to communicate Truth to us. Yeshua IS the LIGHT in that He bears LIGHT, and provides LIGHT- He was, as man on earth, The Vessel of Holy Light. Knowledge of Yeshua is knowledge of G-d, this KNOWLEDGE is LIGHT to us, a light to our path. “Your word (Yeshua) is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” Psalms 119:105 Yeshua is the Word according to John 1:1. He is indeed the LIGHT of the World, to the World.
Just as Yeshua is the Light, so the Holy Spirit is the FIRE, the source of the light. Yeshua as man is actually not the source of light/fire as the Son see footnote (He is G-d, and in a real sense He is the source, but speaking as in the Trinity, He brings the fire from Heaven. The Holy Spirit, that is sent after Yeshua ascends back to the place with His Father, is, as a part of the Trinity, the source of Spiritual Fire. Again, the Son, Yeshua, the Spirit, and the Father are One), He (Yeshua) is the ONE who BRINGS the knowledge of the FIRE (lamp/candle) from Heaven AS LIVING PROOF, as a vessel FILLED with this FIRE from Heaven, in MERCY- Yeshua, as living water, enables us to be filled with the Spirit as the earth is enabled by water to bring forth life. Yeshua is literally the Light of this Truth to the world, and all of creation, in heaven (angelic realm) as well as this universe. The shining of Yeshua is TRUTH. The light created in the universe is to reveal, by its design, TRUTH.
There is a REASON light shines. It is important to understand that the HOLY SPIRIT is the source of light, just as fire, and lightening, etc., is the source of light in the physical. Yeshua shines brightly, not because He was a shining man, but because He was a man FULL of the Holy Spirit of G-d. Yeshua was a man full of the SPIRIT of G-d. His RADIANCE was from G-d IN HIM. He did not shine in His physical, natural body, His radiance was SPIRIT- He was the perfect representation, the exact IMAGE, of His Father, G-d Almighty. Once He was resurrected though, and having RETURNED to the place He had before He was born into this world, and having received His NEW “super human” body that REFLECTED His inner spiritual man, He indeed shines brighter than the sun. His new body is no longer of WATER, in that, He is PURE FIRE POWER. This is seen in His second coming with FIRE, and judgment, to DESTROY the wickedness. The time for mercy is now, the time for the WATER of the WORD is now. There is coming a day when ALL WILL be JUDGED by FIRE. O, that we learn to walk in His Mercy NOW, and are washed, and made ready NOW. May we LEARN TO WALK IN THE FIRE OF THE HOLY GHOST, NOW! BY THE MERCIES OF G-D, IN THE GRACE PROVIDED BY YESHUA, OUR SHEPHERD, OUR REDEEMER. This certainly is not a game we play at. This is reality. TODAY is the day of Salvation, there is coming a day of JUDGEMENT. Our new bodies, when we are caught up to be with Yeshua, and are changed in the twinkling of an eye, will be bodies of FIRE, that SHINE, and not water (chaos). There will also be in time, a NEW HEAVEN and a NEW EARTH formed, made IN FIRE…. Not water (chaos). There will be a DIFFERENT dependency for LIFE as we know it today. There is coming real change in the Universe that ushers in ETERNITY, not just for time itself, but for all created matter. The NATURE of creation will change for ETERNITY, or, to dwell forever in eternity.
This is the ultimate intention of our Creator for you and I, that we put off this mortality, and put on immortality. Immortality SHINES. Immortality is what YESHUA has to give us who believe in Him. Mortality, that which grows old, that which ages, and dies, and is receding even from birth, is represented by darkness. As darkness recedes from light, so the life of man recedes from LIFE itself even from birth, our days being numbered, because of the fall of Adam. Yeshua brings a NEW BIRTH in IMMORTALITY, not made as the natural, fallen, man, but as the Son of YHVY, G-d Himself. And, just as He has a new, resurrected body OF LIGHT, so shall we BE LIKE HIM, when we see Him as He is… we will be changed from this mortal body to a heavenly body of light. Only G-d could have done something like this. Only G-d could have managed such an amazing work…, and that’s exactly what He did, coming in form as a man, taking upon Him the humility of a servant, and overcoming DEATH, AND THE GRAVE, living without sin, perfect, spotless, so that WE MIGHT HAVE LIFE in Him. This is a good spot to stop and give Him praise, and thanks!
Darkness has always been DESTINED from the very beginning, to COME TO AN END. Immortality is represented by light, and immortality SHINES in the darkness and overcomes the darkness- this is put in the design of creation to show/reveal TRUTH. We see the first glimpse of this when YHVY said, “let there be light”. We will get into this in more detail in the verses ahead with the creation of Adam.
“There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? LORD, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us” Psa. 4:6. .” The light of G-d, the SPIRITUAL LIGHT from His countenance is the Holy Spirit being revealed to fallen man in and through YESHUA, and this SHINING forth is nothing but GOODNESS. IT IS GOOD for us who are HIS OWN POSSESSION! Again, this TRUTH is BUILT-IN to all of creation as REVELATION of who HE is.
There is to be GOODNESS represented by this creation of light. G-d meant it to be this way. He made all things in a certain order, to perform as a testimony to His GOODNESS. All that is within the Universe is a testimony to His Goodness to MAN. Light represents GOODNESS, MERCY. When things seem hopeless, there is LIGHT to come, HOPE! When all else fails us in this world, when man fails, when family, friends, jobs, governments, when all else fails, He never fails! When all around is nothing but darkness, He comes to light our way. “You, O LORD, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.”
Psa. 18:28 “Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.” Psa. 97:11
4 “And God saw the light, that it was good (it performed just as He designed, and was revealing just what His purpose was to be revealed throughout all time, till the end of time): and God divided the light from the darkness”.
YHVH created the light for a PURPOSE, and here in verse 4 we read that His creation performs as He designed it to perform, to reveal GOODNESS, MERCY, TRUTH in the midst of darkness to shed light on what is hidden in darkness, and it is used in this way throughout the Word of G-d, throughout the whole of the Bible. He is saying that it fulfills it’s purpose as light. G-d made light to express something He has designed the WHOLE UNIVERSE to express, and He is showing the DIFFERENCE between what is NOT Him, and what IS Him. He is LIGHT to His creation. He is LIGHT to the understanding of man. The KNOWLEDGE of the Creator is LIGHT, and is the opposite of darkness. He is not His creation, and, He is not darkness, but rather, He is to COME INTO darkness AS LIGHT. This is the Gospel of Yeshua from the very foundations of the World.
Psa. 36:9 For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light.
This truth is THROUGH-OUT the whole of creation. The very nature of G-d almighty is to bring light. There is nothing in Him that brings darkness (there is no shadow of turning in Him). The knowledge of the Holy One sheds light, never darkness. His nature is to make known which is as light making known in the darkness what is hidden, or not seen, or unknown. He is all truth, He is the source and center of all creation, there is no KNOWLEDGE apart from Him. His TRUTH brings LIGHT to the mind, to the soul. He is SEPERATING the light from the darkness in this verse to SHOW His very NATURE by revealing Himself in His creative work.
The darkness in the Universe is representative of the absence of G-d being IN something. Darkness cannot express who G-d is, for darkness, by its very design, HIDES rather than reveals. The nature of darkness does not reveal anything, but is only able to keep hidden. The LIGHT removes this HINDERANCE. There is nothing intrinsically “evil” about darkness, or nighttime, or SPACE filled with stars, etc. This is simply CREATION that is SPEAKING TRUTH by its DESIGNER. Evil comes when the purposes of G-d are MISUSED for something OTHER THAN His purpose. Evil is likened to darkness because there is no revelation of LIGHT involved, but rather, the opposite. Evil does not seek the knowledge of G-d in light, but to dismiss, or misuse the knowledge of G-d, or reject the knowledge of G-d, for ANOTHER knowledge- a knowledge that comes from hiding, and deception, and covering up, which is exactly the work of Satan. Yet, there is nothing else in existence that is REAL other than the Truth of G-d, so ALL ELSE is a lie, and MUST BE done in the dark, to HIDE its falsehood. There is only ONE G-d, ONE Creator, ONE ultimate POWER, in this universe, and to reject Him for another is A FALSENESS, a DARKNESS, a ABSENCE of light. Rejecting G-d is rejecting His light/knowldege. This is evil. Pursuing darkness/absence of light, is a pursuit of the very opposite of who G-d is. There are some who LOVE the darkness, they LOVE the absence of G-d in their thoughts, and lives. They REFUSE to acknowledge Him, and act as if He doesn’t exist and imagine a knowledge of their own making, thus calling darkness light, and light darkness. Is. 5:20 “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!” This pursuit of DARKNESS is an EVIL and results in evil living, because ALL things were made by G-d, so the USE of anything in existence is a MISUSE of GOOD. Again, evil is a misuse of good. Eccl. 2:13 “Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness.”
Darkness actually represents the natural world, and universe. Darkness represents ALL created things. Again, the darkness itself is not evil. Again, G-d COMES INTO His creation as LIGHT. Creation is nothing in itself, it is not G-d. This is such an amazing thought here, if meditated on. The willingness of our Creator, to CREATE something like this universe, that IS NOT HIM, and actually TAKE PART in this realm, and REVEAL Himself in this realm, as He has done. I am in awe of Him. I have to admit just now, I feel much like a worm standing in the presence of the all powerful G-d of the Universe. He is MORE, He is GREATER, He is ABOVE ALL, He is MIGHTY, He is WONDERFUL!!!
We will get into the significance of the separation of light from darkness in the coming verses and chapters in the Torah. I’m hoping to establish a train of thought for the readers as we begin to enter into the depths of the scripture.
